Pool Leak Test Procedure

Prior to calling us for service, you should perform the following two tests to determine if your pool actually does have a leak.

Simple Leak Test

If you suspect that your pool is leaking, please perform the following test and then call us with the results:

  1. Fill the pool to the proper level, then mark the level of the pool with tape (e.g., on a wall of the pool);
  2. Run pool continuously for 24 hours;
  3. Using a ruler, measure the amount of water loss;
  4. Fill back to same starting point;
  5. Turn pool off for 24 hours;
  6. Using a ruler, measure the amount of water loss;
  7. Call our office with the measurements.

This test will save you money and us time.  What it tells us is whether the leak is in the structure or in the plumbing.

Call us if you have any questions: 631-242-2667.

The Bucket Test

DO NOT ALLOW SMALL CHILDREN TO PLAY WITH ANY BUCKETS.
  1. Turn off the filter/pump system and let the water settle down.
  2. Using a bucket or plastic wastebasket with no leaks of their, fill the container with water until approximately 3/4 full.
  3. Place the container on the first or second step in the swimming pool, and anchor it by placing a small brick or rock inside of it.
  4. When the water in the container and pool settle, mark the level of the water inside the container (to make a mark, simply make a scratch mark or use a piece of vinyl tape).
  5. Mark the pool water level on the outside of the container.
  6. If so equipped, turn off the automatic filler (if a major leak is suspected, turn off pump and/or shorten the test to 12 hours).
  7. After 24 hours compare the levels. Even if it rains, the water inside the bucket should be the same distance from its mark as the pool water is from the mark on the outside of the bucket. If the water level on the outside of the bucket is further down from its mark than the inside level, the pool is leaking.
