A pool or spa safety cover is a manual or motorized barrier that can be placed over the water’s surface, and is easily opened or closed.
Pool and spa safety covers are a great way to pool safely, because visually they say, “not open” for use to curious children. Safety covers for pools can be manual or motorized, while covers for spas are generally manual.
When a safety cover is properly in place over the pool or spa, it provides a high level of safety for children less than 5 years of age by inhibiting their access to the water. To maintain that high level of security, it’s important to remove ladders and slides when using covers on pools.
Automatic Safety Covers
Automatic (or powered) safety covers are covers that are fixed in place at one end of the pool (usually the deep end), and opened and closed via the use of a motor. Together with tracks that are installed along the long edges of the pool, they provide a high degree of safety when closed.

Following are just a few examples of the Cover-Pools® System, installed:
Manual (or unpowered) safety covers are covers that can either be fixed in place at one end of the pool (usually the deep end) and guided along tracks during opening and closing, or simply dragged over the top of the pool and fixed in place by manual attachments. Unlike automatic safety covers, these covers must be opened and closed by dragging them into place.

What’s the difference between a regular pool cover and a safety cover?
A typical solid vinyl pool cover is little more than a tarp to put over your pool. It does not prevent children or pets from gaining access to the pool. All safety covers must conform to the Standard Performance Specification set by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). According to the ASTM, a safety cover must be able to support a certain amount of weight, not permit gaps that a child or pet could squeeze through, and remove standing water. LOOP-LOC safety covers far exceed minimum ASTM standards, however. Built from extremely strong material and secured tightly to the deck by heavy-duty springs and brass anchors, a LOOP-LOC safety cover puts a “lock” on a pool that will prevent children and pets from gaining access to the water.
Another pool dealer offered to sell me a safety cover “just like LOOP-LOC.” Aren’t all safety covers pretty much the same?
Not at all! The safety of the cover entirely depends on the quality of its materials and manufacturing. LOOP-LOC uses materials that are in many cases far superior to those used by competitors. For example, we use double perimeter webbing and double-thick straps, extremely high-strength 302 grade stainless steel springs, and polyester bonded thread that costs almost 10 times more than the thread used by some of our competitors. We also hand-inspect every stitch on every cover – and even use contrasting white thread, so our inspectors can see instantly if a stitch is missed! LOOP-LOC’s founder co-invented the safety pool cover and started this company for the single purpose of creating the highest quality, safest covers available. A True A Pool Cover Safety Story in New Jersey
JoAnne Burgess and her daughter Lynda of Mahwah, NJ, were shocked one afternoon to see a black Ford Explorer roll through their backyard and land in their swimming pool. Inside the large SUV were two young boys who had, while apparently entering the vehicle to listen to the radio, slipped the vehicle into gear from a downhill parking spot. Luckily for the hapless passengers, the Burgess’s pool was covered by a pool safety cover. The safety cover, “which was purchased in 1988 and used every winter since then, never ripped,” JoAnn writes. “It did sink down some with the weight… of the SUV, but [it] kept the vehicle afloat enough so we could get the two boys trapped inside out. It also prevented the rear end of the SUV from slipping into eight feet of water at the deep end of the pool.”
